Switzerland apologizes

2009-08-21-switzerland-apologies

Yesterday, our Swiss president went to Libya for one reason : apologizing.

Why? because the Libyan government said so. Yes, it’s that simple. Okay okay… just for the rest of the world who doesn’t really care about what is going on in the Swiss diplomatic issues, last year at around that period of time, the son of the president of Libya (Colonel Kadhafi) was arrested in Geneva for persecuting his servants. Obviously this was a big deal becaaaause the son of the president was treated like an ordinary thug by the Geneva police.

All of the sudden, this turns into a huge drama where Libya demands Switzerland to “apologize”. What did our political representative do? Yup, nothing.

So Libya started this mental warfare where they started blocking all Swiss companies doing business, then taking all their money (a whooping 5 billion dollars) out of their Swiss bank accounts and finally, stoped providing Switzerland with oil (Tamoil)…  oh and let’s not forget these two Swiss citizens being held in hostage in the Libyan Swiss embassy.

Last few days, things started to level up with the son of the president publicly stating “If I had an atomic bomb, I would nuke Switzerland right now!”. Next thing you know, our Swiss president Hans-Rudolf Merz flies to Libya without anyone knowing about it and publicly apologizes on behalf of all people in Switzerland.

As a result, the Libyans accepted to open business to Switzerland again and promised to free the two hostages by the 1st of September (no signed contract, just oral promise). Please allow me to be a bit bitter about this situation. It’s true that this was probably the only reasonable thing to do and even though it doesn’t look like it, our president must have had some “corones” to go there on his own. Hell if these two hostages are indeed free by September 1st, then it was a good move. But we shouldn’t forget that Libya is a big business opportunity for Swiss companies so at the end of the day, one can say that money talks louder.

Anyway, to be honest I don’t really care about all this drama, about Libyan money and Tamoil oil. All that matters is that our two Swiss citizens get home safely.

Jundooz, years ago there was a story of an old lady, very rich, very old, very angry, who returned to her hometown.

The hometown was soo miserable, so she bought everything over there and promised things will be OK again, soon.

    On one condition, though.

The village men had to kill an old man who did her wrong, years ago.

“We are in a democracy, we cannot do that”, they sad at first.

“So no money to you”, she said.

So they killed the old man.

That’s the story of the old lady.

The title of the story is “The Visit of the Old Lady”. By Friedrich Dürenmatt, a Swiss writer.

    This is Switzerland, alas.

A clever story about dictatorship and democracy. Both have their flaws, it is only when things get extreme that we understand how wrong we can go.
