Following the brilliant strip from Luechan, I thought it would be interesting to give you all the stages of you mind when something awful happens to you such as being fired, an accident, a terrorist attack or a giant Hello Kitty painted on your wall.
Well as the title says, the first stage is of course the shock. Most of the time (can last 2 to 20 seconds), you’re basically speechless. You have no word… you’re without a speech… ok ok you get it. There’s much to be said on this first stage. Obviously, the bigger the situation, the longer the silence, like when 9/11 occurred, I was pretty much had no speech for a few minutes and so were the people around me watching the tv.
There’s also the way you announce a catastrophe. If you take “OMG COME QUICK QUICK QUICK LOOK! WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO THIS IS HOPELESS WTF WE RAN OUT OF SALT!!!” or someone comes to you and goes “hi, you’re fired”. See?
Graphically, the representation of that 1st stage is very easy… especially in a strip because all you do is drawing the first square… then copy-paste the 2 others. We all know that time and space in a comics are based on different rules because everything is sequential unlike real in real life where everything is happening on many different levels.
I hate people who never get surprised or shocked because it loses all the momentum of the drama. Like “OMG A PLANE JUST CRASHED IN MY HOUSE!!!! – oh… yeah? what company?”… idiots.
[edit] Luechan has already published a response to this article… she’s quick!
