Windows 7

2009-10-22-windows-7

Today, October 22nd 2009, Windows 7 comes out. I’m not gonna fuel more of that Mac vs Windows geek war but it’s obvious Macs are way better so no debate here.

So I’m just gonna point out that despite the joke called “Vista”, Microsoft still comes up with a billion versions of its new operating system. Ok fine 3 versions but still, do you realize how much trouble it is just because of that? I do get the logic behind that strategy, they make you believe that Windows is after all cheap but if you want to shine and be special, you could spend lots of cash for the “ultimate” version… because you’re like a super-hero you know, you need the “ultimate” one.

And don’t even start with the upgrade options… If like most people you kept Windows XP, you should know that you can’t just upgrade straight to 7… you got to back your files up, erase everything and do a clean install. I mean what’s up with that? This is no one evening task, this will take your entire weekend! Have a look at this chart too… I mean… really… (click ton enlarge)

And what’s up with the price? Seriously when you come up with a product like Vista… really, your next one should be a free upgrade. Because I don’t know 7 I admit, but Vista? Aero – Aqua anyone? Gadgets – Widgets? Vista is a pale failure to imitate OSX and that’s just sad.

Anyway, I can’t wait to hear about how wonderful Windows 7 is. I mean Brian X. Chen wrote an article on WIRED about “7 things you should know about upgrading to Windows 7” and he seems pretty confident it’s a smart move. Funnily enough, I haven’t heard so much about it… like whatever happened to the campaign? Did they fire the entire marketing department and move all that cash to actual software development?
