Selling weapons

2009-11-30-selling-weapons

We had votations today and one of the topic was about to decided if Switzerland should stop selling military equipments to other countries. No need to say that a smashing NO won. Switzerland will therefore continue its business. Big drama (not as big as the minaret campaign but still…) because there’s a huge paradox in Switzerland that people seem to not understand. First of all, we’re a neutral country. Secondly, we host many humanitarian “save-the-world-shit” organizations (the clowns at U.N. just to give you the most obvious example) and third, Switzerland owns a very rich tradition in high precision equipments especially in the military field.

I’m not having a go at I.C.R.C. peeps here (how could I, I have friends and my precious there), because if it wasn’t for them, the world would be a shittier place. But here’s the thing, if all we do is help people then neutrality wouldn’t make sense. Yes, it’s evil because it’s like inventing a deadly disease and producing/selling the cure at the same time… playing both fields is clearly being a prick.

But selling weapons goes far beyond a binary state of mind between evil and good. Producing military equipment creates jobs. Also, if we stop sell to other countries, we might as well shut down our factories and our army would be nonexistent and thus, we’d be depending on others for our protection. Finally, believe it or not, military projects and researches have helped other industries to prosper.

I hate emotional votations because people bring the most retarded arguments like the non-smoking campaign. War is clearly retarded but sometime, with all these variables, you can understand why it is inevitable and why co-existence will provide a blood fest time to time.
